Telephone Interviewing

Over the past decade, telephone interviewing has faced increasing challenges from its negative association with sales telemarketers and the encroachment of web-based methods of data collection. Yet data collection by telephone still offers a host of benefits including live interaction with respondents and the ability for interviewers to prompt respondents through a moderately lengthy questionnaire. Telephone interviewing is often used in order to find hard-to-reach, specific target samples.

W5 recognizes that telephone interviewers must be knowledgeable about the subject matter when speaking to qualified respondents, as it is unlikely a qualified respondent will fully disclose their thoughts and feelings to just anyone. Telephone interviewers must be able to develop a rapport with those they are interviewing in order to extract their attitudes and perceptions.
