Recap: StratFest and Jay Chiat Awards

By Nick Lowery

StratFest brought together some of the brightest minds in the agency and strategy world this past week, and I left with a lot to think about.

A few conversations and themes really stuck with me, so I wanted to share some of my biggest takeaways.

How do we inspire clients to take action and motivate their consumers?

One of the biggest insights for me was the difference between persuasion and inspiration. It’s easy to fall back on the same deck, the same talking points, and the same approach with every client. But the best way to move someone is to connect with them on a human level.

That means bringing emotion and passion into the conversation, understanding the challenges that matter to them, and telling a story that actually resonates.

A quote from Michael Fanuele with Talk Like Music that I loved was, “Be the leap, not the logic.” We can get caught up in the data, the strategy, and the reasoning behind our decisions, but at the end of the day, emotions are a huge part of what makes us human. Sometimes, we need to remember that.

How is uncertainty changing the way consumers interact with brands?

With so much uncertainty in the world right now, it’s no surprise that consumer priorities and spending habits are shifting. External factors play a big role in how people shop, what they prioritize, and where they’re willing to spend their money.

Lauren Ingerman with Amazon shared some interesting stats that really put this into perspective. 65% of consumers are more conscious of their shopping habits, 38% are less likely to treat themselves, and 32% have cut back on gift-giving for themselves, family, and friends.

For me, one item that ran out is that brand loyalty isn't something companies can afford to take for granted. People's needs and priorities change, and brands have to be willing to change with them. Understanding what matters to consumers, and why, has never been more important.

Who needs to adapt: junior talent or agencies?

This was one of the questions Jess Collins with VCU Brandcenter and Shazzia Khan with Havas Health explored when discussing how agencies work with junior talent.

When someone joins an agency, should they feel comfortable sharing their ideas from day one, or do they need to earn the right to have their voice heard?

People want to contribute, bring value, and feel like their opinions matter. Agencies hire strategists for their perspectives and fresh thinking, but those perspectives don't mean much if junior talent isn't given a seat at the table.

Of course, that goes both ways. Junior talent needs to stay curious, be willing to learn, and put in the work to grow. But agencies also have a responsibility to create an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up, asking questions, and sharing ideas.

Not every idea is going to be a winner. Trust me, I've thrown a few bad ones out there myself! But creating space for people to contribute, even when an idea misses the mark, can go a long way toward building stronger teams and keeping good people around.

I also had the opportunity to attend the Jay Chiat Awards, which was a fantastic evening filled with laughs and a celebration of some of the best strategic work in the industry. Congratulations to all the winners, including Gold winners Arnold Worldwide, TRG, Ogilvy, Golin Ketchum, and broadhead, to name a few! It was especially rewarding to cheer on several agencies I’ve had the pleasure of supporting and collaborating with. It’s always exciting to see great work recognized and celebrate the talented teams behind it.

These were a few of my favorite conversations and takeaways from this year's StratFest and Jay Chiat Awards. Beyond grateful for the opportunity to learn from and meet so many talented people across the industry.

Already looking forward to next year! 🙌 If you attended, we’d love to hear your biggest takeaways. Feel free to drop them in the comments below 👇
